(Luke 11:9 & 10)

God’s never too busy to answer our prayer,
no matter how small it may be.
He’s willing and able our burdens to bear;
all our cares laid on Him sets us free.
God wants for His children to grow every day
more confident, trusting, reliant.
His ear is on every small thing that we say:
In His will, with our prayers He’s compliant.

A child never worries that what he demands
is silly, or too small to voice.
So boldly he comes, and before us commands,
and to answer he leaves little choice.
Sometimes we’re too busy to listen right then,
and try to ignore his loud crying;
or maybe we tell him to come back again,
or we don’t even bother replying.

A child is relentless: he’ll keep up his quest.
He’ll pester until we give in.
He knows what he wants, and he’ll not let it rest:
with persistence, he finally will win.
But God is not like us: He wants us to ask.
He listens to all we are saying.
He’ll not turn away, for His patience is vast.
No. The Lord loves to hear His saints praying.

Luke chapter eleven, verse nine and verse ten
Says, “Ask, and most surely you’ll find.
Just knock, and the door will be opened right then.
If you seek Him, you’ll find peace of mind.”
Christ bids us to come; let our thoughts be made known.
Our prayers to our Lord let’s be sending.
He’s waiting and watching right there by His throne,
and His ear to our voice He’ll be bending.

The media are at it again. The hype has been on for several days now as Valentine’s Day draws close. I marvel at the rate of popularity for the celebration of Valentine’s Day within the past ten years in Nigeria. Some of those who celebrate this day do not even know who St. Valentine was or what the day is all about. All they know is that it is a day set apart for lovers. That information, is good enough for them.

I am not writing to criticize the celebration of Valentine’s day, rather I am only using this opportunity to introduce the greatest lover of all times. He is introduced in the Bible, by none other than the one who should know, Jesus Christ our Lord. Quoting the Lord in John 3:16, which is a very popular verse by the way, “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him, should not perish but have everlasting life”. This is love in its purest form. It is not carnal or sensual; it is the ultimate expression of love.

God himself expressed his love beautifully to us through His Word in Jer 31:3 “I have loved you, my people, with an everlasting love. With unfailing love I have drawn you to myself”. God’s love never fails, that is why no matter how deep in sin a man may feel he has gone, God’s love will reach down and bring him out.

Pardon me to say that I have never really celebrated Valentine’s Day. I remember telling my wife on one Valentine’s Day that I do not need a special day to show her love, rather I should seek to show her each day how much I love her. Of course, I have read many versions of the history of St. Valentine’s Day but I am not yet convinced which of the versions is true. I personally believe that a Christian is and should be a carrier of love and every day should be an opportunity to ‘infect’ others with God’s love.

Love is so crucial in the life of a Christian that God himself is described as Love. Let’s take a closer look at John 3:16. “God so loved”. He did not just love; He is passionately in love with you and I. He loves us with a love that will never let go. He never falls out of love like we humans do. There was nothing else He could use to show His love towards us but the priceless gift of His Son and our Saviour Jesus Christ.

Jesus, the image of God, while He walked upon the surface of the earth, reflected God’s love. “Jesus went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him” Acts 10:38. He gave everything without holding back, even His own life.

Therefore, while the world runs wild in their own show of ‘love’, a word which they do not know or can understand, let us be God’s vessels of love showing the world what true love really is. “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” John 13:34.

When the Haiti earthquake hit, it was virtually impossible for rescue operations to commence immediately. This was because the destruction was of a massive scale, affecting all forms of infrastructure. Initially all we heard and saw was the dead littered all over the place. It looked as if God had forsaken the people.

Days later, good news began to emerge from the bad. We began to hear news of people who were literally dug out of collapsed buildings with bare hands and small tools. How else would you be able to explain the rescue of a 15-day old baby who spent half her lifetime under a collapsed building? Or a 70-year old woman dragged out from under the rubble after being trapped for one week? Or the young girl who was rescued after 11 days of being buried alive under stone and concrete?
I take a cue from the mother of the baby, she said, “It was the mercy of God”. Isn’t it amazing that this woman could recognize the hand of God amidst such large scale devastation? The old woman was singing when she was brought out of the rubble which had her trapped for days.

Many are trapped today, not necessarily under a collapsed building, but rather, they are trapped by the enemy of our souls Satan. The scriptures tell us, ‘The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full’ (John 10:10) When we find ourselves trapped, we can be assured that God is not instrumental to our entrapment. Only the enemy of our soul takes interest in anything that keeps us from living our lives to the fullest. This was shy Jesus said, ‘I came that they might have life and have it to the fullest!’

What are the entrapment strategies of the devil? The first strategy is deception. When we find ourselves trapped by a vice, habit or even a wrong relationship, our first response would be, ‘I don’t think there is anything wrong with this’. This thought is strengthened when we come in contact with people who practice similar things. We begin to believe in the lie we have told ourselves and that others have told us.

The second strategy is hopelessness. Deception usually does not take long to wear off. The entrapped person now knows that he is in bondage. The problem at this point is that he or she does not see a way out. You hear them say things like, ‘I’ve tried to end that relationship but I just can’t seem to go through with it’ or ‘I don’t want to take drugs anymore but I can’t seem to find a way out’. They are in a place of hopelessness. They want out but have been told there is no way out.

What is the solution to entrapment? It is simply turning Satan’s strategies against him. The only weapon against deception is Truth. “Then you shall know the truth, and the truth will set you free’ (John 8:32) Once we know the truth, we are on our way to freedom from all that entraps us.

The second antidote is hope. ‘Even when there was no reason for hope, Abraham kept hoping—believing that he would become the father of many nations. For God had said to him, “That’s how many descendants you will have!” (Rom 4:18)

No matter how deep you think you are, buried under the weight of sin, I have good news for you; God is sending help your way! Do not despair! Do not give up and do not give in to the lie of the devil. You don’t belong down there; you belong up here, where there is peace, love and joy!

The season comes and we see the same scenario playing out itself. The shopping plazas are full; the cities are bustling with traffic, both human and vehicular. You wonder where such mammoth crowd emerged from all of a sudden.

‘But its Christmas!’ you might say, and I agree with you. My question however is, ‘Whose Christmas?’
I was reading the account of the birth of Jesus and something struck my mind. Mary and Joseph had gone to Bethlehem to be counted in line with the decree of Ceaser Augustus. While there, she went into labour. Imagine for a moment, being in Joseph’s shoes. He must have gone from inn to inn looking for accommodation and could not find any because they were all booked by others, who had also come to Bethlehem to be counted.

When all efforts proved abortive, they had to settle for a manger. In those days, Inns were raised several feet high so that the space underneath can be used to keep the animals, usually donkeys and other transport animals belonging to the travellers. That space is known as a manger. It was like a modern day motel car park. I wonder where Mary got the clothes she wrapped the child in? Who were the midwives who helped with the delivery? These are questions the scriptures didn’t tell us.

One unmistakeable fact is that Jesus was born in a humble way. It is a sharp contrast from the hustle and bustle we see around us as Christmas approaches. I believe Christmas should be celebrated, after all the proclamation of the angels to the Magi was a proclamation of joy. Our rejoicing should rest on what God did for us by giving us His only begotten son.

I know that for God, it must have been a bittersweet experience. He must have been happy to know that His plans for the salvation of mankind was going full course and that many were about to be freed from the clutches of the devil. On the other hand, how it must have hurt Him, knowing that He was giving up His only begotten son, to be abused, forsaken and rejected.

For us who are called by His name, our celebration should be the celebration of praise and thanksgiving for the ultimate gift given to us by God. We should also carry this celebration further by sharing with others so that they can also be free from the power of the devil.

We should also identify the needy around us and share the love and compassion of Christ to them. This I believe is the real Christmas celebration.

How would you feel when going through tough and difficult circumstances, someone rushes to you exclaiming, ‘I have good news for you!’ Skeptical, wary, excited? I could understand if the first two responses are evident. It would take some more information for one to become excited when the circumstances are not favourable.
This was the state of the nation of Israel at the time if Jesus’ birth which was put at about 4. BC. It was not the best of time for the Jews who were currently subject to the Roman Empire under Caesar Augustus. As if that were not bad enough, they were being ruled at this time by the tyrannical king, Herod who was made king by the Romans. He was a stern and wicked ruler who had no problem killing anyone who posed a threat to his throne even members of his own family. The Jews lived in subjection and fear under this foreigner who was made ruler over them.

It was at this time that some shepherds while minding their own business in the fields tending their ship, witnessed a strange sight. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared to them amidst heavenly floodlights. Of course their first response, which would be our response today as well, was fright. However, the angel assured them calmly that there was nothing to fear because what he brought was good news, not only for them but for the entire world. A child had been born and the purpose of that child was to rescue man from the tyranny of the devil.

Let us examine the responses of a number of people to the coming of the baby king. The first were the shepherds. ‘When they saw the star, they were overjoyed’ (Matthew 2:10). These men weren’t just happy, they were ecstatic! It meant so much to them that God chose to reveal this news to mere shepherds rather than the astrologers and religious leaders of their time.

Herod: Being the kind of king that he was, one would not be surprised that he became disturbed when he heard the news. (Matt 2:3) Why was he worried? He knew that his kingdom was at an end. He had made careful enquiries and found out that indeed there was a prophecy about a child who will be born to become the king of the Jews. He could not let this happen. The solution was to eliminate the child before he grew up to become an opposition to his throne.

Jerusalem: One would have expected the Jews to be happy and ecstatic like the shepherds but on the contrary, they were as troubled as Herod himself. The shepherds, who were foreigners, believed but the Jews because of their unbelief saw the birth of this child as doom for them rather than liberation. Although they were under Roman rule and resented this, it was better for them to live in peace under subjection than to rebel and suffer the consequence. Such was their myopic and foolish thinking.

Simeon the Priest: He had been informed through prophecy that he would not die till he see the consolation of Israel. He obviously lived up to a very old age, waiting for the time this event would happen. When Jesus’ parents brought the baby to the temple for dedication, Simeon was already waiting, having been prompted by the Holy Spirit. He died a very fulfilled and happy man.

So much is happening in our world today and the news is full of all kinds of evil reports too many to follow. However, we have good news that can never be tainted.

‘For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this’ (Isaiah 9:6 – 7)

One lesson we can learn from the birth of our Saviour is that no matter what you may have been going through this year, be rest assured that God never disappoints. If He has promised, He will do what He says. You however have to be ready for His response so that you will not reject it when it comes, just like the Jews did.

‘For nothing is impossible with God’ (Luke 1:37)

One of the main activities of the Christmas season is the exchange of gifts between family members and loved ones. In some homes, children wake up on Christmas day to find presents waiting for them under the Christmas tree in the living room, presumably left there by Santa Claus.
In many countries in Africa, Santa Claus is not well known to leave presents at home, possibly because of the poor economic climate. However, the children get to visit him in his grotto where he gives gifts to children depending on where he is located. In the privileged neighbourhoods, he is known to give nice fairly expensive gifts which is a fall out of the price parents would have paid to give their children the special privilege to meet Mr. Santa.

In other places however, he gives out cheap and sometimes useless gifts because he needs to make profit from the low fees being paid by parents who belong to the lower class of the society. While such parents complain about the quality of gifts given to their children, their wards are not bothered, the excitement of meeting Santa Claus is enough satisfaction for them.

Irrespective of the quality of the gift, sooner or later, the excitement dies down and the gift loses its value. It soon ends up in the store or one corner of the home reserved for junk items.

There is however one special gift given to all men irrespective of class, race, culture or geographical location. The quality of this gift is the same everywhere. This gift didn’t come from the imaginary Santa; it came from God, the creator of heaven and earth. It came from the one who created us in His own image and likeness. This gift is called eternal life and is was delivered to us not by Santa, but by Jesus Christ our Lord.

As we celebrate Christmas, let us be thankful for the greatest gift mankind has ever received. For those who do not have this gift, it is available freely and you do not have to pay to receive it. All you need to do is to acknowledge that you are a sinner and need God to save you. Accept Jesus into your life and you’ve got the gift for all time!

For it is by free grace (God’s unmerited favor) that you are saved (delivered from judgment and made partakers of Christ’s salvation) through [your] faith. And this [salvation] is not of yourselves [of your own doing, it came not through your own striving], but it is the gift of God. (Eph 2:8 – Amplified Bible)

They can be talking with you one minute and stop mid-sentence to stare at a car passing by which catches their fancy. When they talk about cars, you know from their expression how passionate they are about those four legged creatures.

There are others like me however, who love to drive. Unlike the described earlier, I am not crazy about the make or the model of the vehicle. Just give me a strong car with ability to respond to my need for speed and you can be sure that I will do justice on the wheel within reasonable and legal limits though.

There is something about people who love to drive. No matter how good the person driving the car, they will not feel completely at ease especially if the driver is not someone they are used to. Over time, they relax when they realize that the person is as good as they are or even better.

This is the attitude of many of us when it comes to the vehicle of our life. God has offered to drive us through the very treacherous road of life but many times we want to take the wheels and drive ourselves. We do not feel comfortable having the divine hands of God to drive is through the journey called life. We want to have control, having confidence in our ability to find our way.

A couple of years ago, I drove to another state some 300 kilometres away from Lagos, where I live. At certain places on the highway, there were gaping potholes. Because I did not know the road too well, I had it rough up till a certain point when I began to observe the movement of some transport buses ahead of me. As they moved from one lane to another I followed, realizing that they knew the road so well that even before the bad part of the road looms ahead, they would have changed to the better lane.

Our journey through life is one God knows so well. Many of us are having it rough because we insist on driving ourselves. We think we know they way and so we take over until we receive several knocks and then come running back to God. Graciously He takes over and we realize how smooth the journey is when He takes the driving seat.

The disciples of Jesus were in a similar dilemma in the middle of the sea. Jesus was asleep in the boat when a tempest began. They battled with the boat trying to make sure it did not capsize. These were professional sailors and fishermen. They knew all about riding the storms at sea but this was unlike any they had seen before. When they had done all they could, in exasperation they woke up Jesus and said, ‘Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?’ (Mark 4:38) Jesus responded, ‘Why are you so afraid?’ Three words were enough for the boisterous winds to calm down, ‘Peace, Be Still! (Mark 4:39)

I have heard a number of people I have encouraged over the years asked a similar question, ‘Does God really care about me?’ My response is to smile and encourage them that He indeed does care. I have been there before and I know how it feels when it looks like all you have done isn’t good enough to move you from where you are to where you want to be.

It is time for you to leave the driving seat! Let God have control over your life. Hand over your plans, decisions and ways to Him. Then and only then, will you begin to ensure a peace that passes all human understanding (Phil 4:7)

When next you feel things are not moving in the right direction in your life, pause a bit and ask yourself, ‘Who is in the driving seat now?’

One of my all-time favorite quotes is from Coach John Wooden: “What really counts in life is what you learn after you know it all.

After the initial chuckle, that is an ouch-maker for most of us. The older we get, the more set in our ways we are likely to be. The older we get, the harder it is to master new skills and adapt to new paradigms. The older we get, the more likely we are to tune out ideas that would require re-thinking a point of view.

I wonder how all you older accountants and CPAs felt about replacing those pale green ledger sheets and sharp pencils with computer software. The software required one of those newfangled machines called a computer! Do you know anybody who said it was just a fad that wouldn’t last?

How does a physician stay current with new medications, diagnostic tools, and therapies? How does an attorney stay abreast of changes in the law? How does a professor stay current in her area of scholarly research?

A key to success in every profession or business is teachability. You can get left behind pretty quickly these days. So a really good educational experience bears little resemblance to indoctrination – the memorization of fixed right answers. It is instead the mastering of good tools that allow one to do credible research and the fostering of a mindset that is willing to test everything.

In one’s personal spiritual life, pride is among the deadliest of sins for the simple reason that it prohibits learning. The idea is not that we should vacillate as doubting, ambivalent souls. Conviction is admirable. But informed convictions are eager to entertain questions, new ideas, and challenges. It is rigid dogmatism that is offended by them. And Jesus rebuked folks who wouldn’t think or grow.

Don’t you suspect openness to instruction was a big part of Jesus’ charge that his followers be child-like? “Unless you change and become like little children,” he said, “you will never enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:3).

More good ideas have been killed with “We’ve never done it that way before” than with good reasons as to why it shouldn’t be done some new way.

Maybe the young learn with more eagerness because they aren’t afraid to fail. Perhaps the reason older people or firms or churches learn so little so slowly is that pride makes us unwilling to take the risks necessary for progress.

Prejudice against all things new is self-defeating and unworthy of people in God’s image. There are no uninteresting ideas, only disinterested people.

Heavenly Fans
By Steve Popoola

I love football, the sport Americans call soccer. In Africa and in Nigeria particularly, this sport commands a very large followership and has the highest number of fans compared to other sports. I have noticed that one of the best times to drive in the city of Lagos is when a crucial match involving any of our national teams is going on. The roads would be free as people would be in their homes, offices, hotels or viewing centres watching the match.

You can tell by the mood of the crowd how the match is going. When the crowd is in a sombre mood and everywhere is so quiet you could almost hear the sound of a pin dropping on the ground, then you know the match isn’t going well in favour of the home team. When however you see smiles on their faces and you hear then cheering, you will know that their team is winning.
Now this does not only happen in football but also in other sports as well. The Olympics for instance is one major event, which captures the attention of every nation in the world. For most events, not only are the eyes of those in the arena fixed on them but also that of millions of people from all over the world.

In Hebrews 12:1, we are told that as Christians, we have a great cloud of witnesses watching us as we run the Christian race. These people are our fans. We can’t see them but they can see us. For every victory we achieve, they cheer and celebrate but when we fail, they obviously cannot celebrate but wonder why we could not utilize the resources at our disposal to win.
“A huge cloud of witnesses is all around us. So let us throw off everything that stands in our way. Let us throw off any sin that holds on to us so tightly. Let us keep on running the race marked out for us” (Heb 12:1)

Paul the Apostle understood that an athlete could lose an event if he indulges himself and lacks the discipline required to win the race. He therefore translates this to our spiritual race as well. There is so much that can hinder us from winning the race. It takes courage, determination and the will to succeed!

What are these things that can hinder us and keep our heavenly fans quiet? In the King James Version, they are called weights and besetting sins. The weights are those things, which can slow us down. A physical example is David’s inability to go ahead when dressed up in the armour Saul gave to him. He had to get rid of it before he could go into battle against Goliath. (1 Sam 17: 38 – 39).

These weights are things that are not particularly sinful but have the ability to weight us down spiritually. One example that comes to mind is materialism. Jesus also talked about this when He said, “No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon” (Luke 16:13)
When we focus more on things, there is the tendency for us to lean towards those things to the detriment of our spiritual well being. Our prayer time suffers, our study of God’s word suffers and ultimately our spirit man suffers when we give more time to efforts that will reward us materially. Sometimes we explain this away by saying, ‘I need to make more money so that I can give more for the expansion of God’s kingdom on earth’. However, we should realize that our interface with God is our spirit man and not our physical body. What is the use if we give our all to God and we have no relationship with Him? This is paying more attention to the gift than to the giver!

The sin, or rather, the besetting sins are those sins, which take advantage of our physical weakness. They are the sins that we find ourselves committing time and time again. Some have even concluded that there is nothing they can do about those particular sins. You hear people say things like ‘God understands’. We need to understand that some people have faced the same challenges and trials we are going through today and they succeeded. These people are our heavenly fans. They are cheering us on and telling us, ‘You can do it!’ even when you stumble, they encourage you on.

When you overcome those sins and weights, just imagine a sea of people in a stadium waving flags with your name on it and celebrating your victory! On the alternative, if you give in to the weights and the sin, which easily besets, imagine how quiet the arena would be. Imagine being a fan of a team losing an event at a time when the team had everything going for them.

Let us run the Christian race bearing in mind that we have heavenly fans rooting for us. Unlike the Olympics, this is one race we cannot afford to lose. Let us run with the mindset of a champion.

(This is an extract of Steve Popoola’s teaching at Redeemed Christian Church, Friends parish, London on 27th September 2009)

Introduction: God made us in His image and His likeness – We are objects of God created with His attributes. We inherit from Him the divine nature. Gen 1:26 – 28

When we examine the things God can do, it helps us to understand how far we can go with God, unlimited in His ability to make us what He wants us to be.

What is creation and who can create?

Creation is different from production or invention. Creation means bringing into existence something which never existed before; Making something out of nothing. “Calling those things that were not as if they existed” (Heb 11:13, Rom 4:17)

To invent or to produce, means creating something unknown from something already existing. Therefore, only God can create, while men can invent and produce. Man’s ability to invent is a result of the God’s creative ability which we inherited from him when we were created. God is never surprised with man’s invention because invention is man discovering the hidden mysteries which God reveals to us from time to time by giving some men the unusual ability to discover new things.

What is Biblical Success?

In order for us to understand biblical success, we need to look at the ordinary meaning of the word. The secular world sees success as the attainment of wealth, position and fame.

This is the reason why you don’t see school teachers, nurses, counselors and social workers being called upon to give their success stories. The impact of these people on the society is so enormous, yet we don’t see them as successful because they don’t fall in line according to the world’s standards.

Unfortunately, even the church is getting carried away with the world’s view of success. Leaders are appointed based on their professional and societal status rather than their successful Christian life. The desire to generate funds have made some ministers professional fund raisers and investment motivators.

If we use the world’s standards to evaluate our Lord Jesus Christ, then we will conclude that His was not a success story. He was born in a manger, worked as a carpenter, He had no degree, credentials, awards, prestige, status, possessions, stocks, bonds, insurance, car or home.

But was Jesus a failure? Definitely not! He died for our sins so that we can have eternal life. He may not have had a degree but His teachings are still being studied by Professors and Doctors till this present day. His death on the cross did not kill His teachings nor did it reduce the number of His disciples. On the contrary, millions all over the word continue to accept this teaching and the number is still growing by the day.

God’s measurement of our success is when we live our lives in obedience and faithfulness to Him. (Joshua 1:8)

Does God Want Us To Succeed?

Definitely yes! We can confirm this by looking at the following scriptures

– Gen 24:56 – Abraham’s servant had a successful journey getting a wife for Isaac.

- Gen 39:23 – Joseph had success even when he was in prison.

- 1 Sam 18:14 – In everything David did, he had success

- 1 Chron 22:13 – David passes on the principles of success to Solomon

- Proverbs 16:3 – Commit to the Lord all that you do, and your plans will succeed

- Jeremiah 29:11 – God wants us to prosper

- Duet 8:18 – God gives us the ability to make wealth.

Conclusion

God created man to succeed but we need to understand the principles of success in order to achieve it. Our success story does not end here but is fully realized when we enter into His glory with triumph. May the Lord grant us success all around in Jesus Name, Amen.
