No Dead Ends With God

Written by Steve Popoola on July 24th, 2011

I have discovered in my years of Christian experience, that when it comes to God, there are no dead ends.

In times past, I  found myself in situations where it seemed like there was no way out. I would evaluate all kinds of solution plans but each would lead to dead ends. I would despair and wonder whether to seek alternate routes or give up altogether. One day however, I was confronted with a scripture verse that changed my attitude to the tough situations in life.

Measuring Japan’s Tragedy

Written by Rubel Shelly on July 24th, 2011

All of us have heard the grim news. A 9.0-magnitude earthquake struck Japan last Friday. The massive temblor struck at 2:46 p.m. local time and did significant damage to highways, homes, and factories. Amazingly, although they suffered damage, major buildings near the epicenter – designed to withstand Japan’s frequent earthquakes – did not collapse. But the worst was yet to come.

What Was God Thinking?

Written by Steve Popoola on July 24th, 2011

My friend and I were chatting online a few days ago about the devastation of the many parts of Japan due to the twin-events of the earthquake and the tsunami.  I was giving her graphic details of what I was watching on TV;  huge waves as tall as 27 feet, travelling at 500km/h and  wrecking everything in its path.

As we wondered about the scope and the extent of the carnage, she asked, ‘I wonder what God was thinking when all this was happening?’  I asked her what she meant and she said, ‘Couldn’t He have prevented it from happening?’ My reply was, ‘God made a perfect world but man took a decision contrary to God’s command and since then, we have been  facing the consequences’.

Your Life in God’s Mission

Written by Rubel Shelly on July 24th, 2011

For the sake of argument, let me assume that you have a career path. It may have been challenged of late, and you may be functioning outside your sweet spot. But there is something for which you see yourself best suited. You hope that career will make it possible for you to pay your bills, take care of your family responsibilities, and provide a certain standard of living. You probably also expect it to provide certain less-tangible rewards as titles and social standing.

The Lord’s Prayer (Edited by Steve Popoola)

Written by Renee Butler on July 24th, 2011

As I was driving to work this morning, I felt like praying the Lord’s Prayer.  I prayed it slow… allowing for time to think about each part and what that might mean for this day.  I wanted to make it personal… individual… so I started to pray…

“Our Father, who art in Heaven…”   He is not just my Father, but ours. He has no favourites but He listens to anyone who calls upon Him.

Is All Suffering Evil?

Written by Steve Popoola on July 24th, 2011

On the face of it, suffering is regarded as negative and bad.  Many Christians see suffering  as an attack from the enemy or as a consequence of sin.

The focus of this article is to look at suffering from the Christian perspective and what attitude a Christian should have when undergoing a period of suffering.

The Habits of Love

Written by Joseph Mazzella on February 15th, 2011

I stopped at the local gas station with my oldest son to fill-up my car the other day. I told him to go on in and get himself a can of pop while I pumped the gas. After I finished and got in line to pay I looked to see where he was. I soon found him by the front doors of the store. He was opening one for a woman with her arms full of groceries.

He accepted her thanks with a cheerful “no problem” and quickly moved to the other door to open it for a little girl struggling to pull it out. I smiled when I saw this wonderful goodness, kindness, politeness, and helpfulness in my son. He was so full of the habits of love that it warmed my heart. I told him what a fine, young man he has become as we walked back to the car. It is something I can never tell him enough.

Everlasting Love

Written by Steve Popoola on February 14th, 2011

The media are at it again. The hype has been on for several days now as Valentine’s Day draws close. I marvel at the rate of popularity for the celebration of Valentine’s Day within the past ten years in Nigeria. Some of those who celebrate this day do not even know who St. Valentine was or what the day is all about. All they know is that it is a day set apart for lovers. That information, is good enough for them.

I am not writing to criticize the celebration of Valentine’s day, rather I am only using this opportunity to introduce the greatest lover of all times.

Something New Under the Sun

Written by Mary-Ellen Grisham on February 8th, 2011

“Whatever is has already been,

and what will be has been before;
and God will call the past to account.”
Ecclesiastes 3: 15

“What has been will be again,
what has been done will be done again;
there is nothing new under the sun.”
Ecclesiastes 1: 9

Is God Too Busy to Answer our Prayer?

Written by Helen Dowd on February 8th, 2011

“The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.” Psalm 34:15
“The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” James 5:16
Prayer is essential to the Christian. Just as eating is essential to one’s physical well being, so is prayer to one’s spiritual well being. When we were children, my second youngest sister hated to eat. Consequently, she was small, pale, and physically weak.
