The Christian journey is not a sprint but a marathon, characterised by challenges and trials. How we respond to these obstacles determines the depth of our spiritual growth. Yet, we cannot navigate this journey relying solely on our human strength. To grasp the essence of the Christian walk, we must first comprehend what it truly means to become a Christian..

Being a Christian isn't merely about lineage, religious rituals, or attending church services. It's about recognising our need for forgiveness and salvation, and accepting the grace freely offered by God through Jesus Christ.

Scriptural references such as John 3:16, Ephesians 2:8-9, and 2 Timothy 1:9 underscore the foundational truth that our status as children of God is not earned but bestowed upon us by God's unmerited favour.

Becoming a Christian however, marks not the end but the beginning of a lifelong journey. This journey commences with genuine repentance, a sincere turning away from our past, and a resolute decision to walk in alignment with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. While perfection is not expected from the outset, steadfast trust in the Lord enables us to navigate through uncertainties and doubts, one step at a time.

Remaining steadfast in our faith journey is imperative, for the moment we commit to following Christ, we inadvertently declare war on the forces of darkness. Satan, the archenemy of our souls, ceaselessly endeavours to derail our progress and extinguish the flame of faith within us. Yet, armed with the shield of faith and the sword of truth, we press on, unwavering in our commitment to the cause of Christ.

Consider the stories of biblical stalwarts who embodied resilience in the face of adversity. Joseph, sold into slavery by his own brothers, endured years of hardship yet remained unwavering in his trust in God's providence. His steadfastness ultimately led to his exaltation as a ruler in Egypt—a testament to the faithfulness of God in fulfilling His promises. It is no wonder that when Joseph’s brothers became fearful of revenge, Joseph allayed their fears by telling them, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people.” (Genesis 50:20, NLT)

David was a teenager when he was first anointed as King of Israel. You would have thought David’s life would proceed un an upward trajectory from this point onwards but that was not the case. First, he had to fight Goliath, then for years, he was relentlessly pursued by Saul who saw David as a threat to his dynasty. He eventually became king over Israel many years after he was first anointed.

Apostle Paul's life was marked by persecution, imprisonment, and untold hardships. Yet, in the face of adversity, he remained resolute in his commitment to spreading the gospel, undeterred by the threats and trials that beset him. He was an example of dogged focus on the ultimate goal of the Christian. "No, dear brothers, I am still not all I should be, but I am bringing all my energies to bear on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I strain to reach the end of the race and receive the prize for which God is calling us up to heaven because of what Christ Jesus did for us."

Many years ago, I made a decision to embark on a journey which meant leaving everything behind and starting over in a different country. While many friends respected and encouraged my decision, there were a few who thought I was making a very big mistake. The only reason I was resolute was because I had prayed about this moment for years and I knew without any doubt that this was the answer to my prayers. Fast forward a year later, I met one of the friends who was skeptical about my decision and he told me, "I told you then that you were making a mistake. I take it back. You made the right decision".

While the journey of faith is riddled with obstacles and hardships, it is also illuminated by the promise of divine support and direction. As we navigate life's tumultuous seas, let's find solace and motivation in the stories of those who have walked this path before us, drawing strength from their unwavering faith and resolute perseverance in the face of adversity.

With God by our side as our constant companion and guide, we possess the resilience to withstand any challenge and emerge triumphant in the end. Therefore, let's continue moving forward with unwavering resolve, assured that our faith will sustain us until we reach our ultimate destination.
