The Christian’s Superpowers

by Steve Popoola on October 13th, 2025

We live in a world obsessed with superheroes. From Marvel films to DC comics, we're fascinated by characters with extraordinary abilities. But what if I told you that as Christians, we've been given our own set of superpowers? Not the kind that lets us fly or lift cars, but something far more powerful; abilities that can transform lives, heal wounds and change the world around us.

The first of these superpowers is the power of Love. Love isn't just a warm feeling contrary to what Hollywood will have us believe, but it is the ultimate Christian superpower. Jesus himself said, "By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another" (John 13:35). This is  the kind of love is consistent even when things are difficult, when it costs us something and even when it is not reciprocated.

Paul describes this love beautifully in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, reminding us that love is patient and kind, never envious or boastful. This love doesn't keep a record of wrongs and always protects, always trusts, always hopes.

Many years ago, I met a lovely friend, Shirley through one of the websites where my Biblepraise article was published. She took interest in me and pretty nuch adopted me as a son. She didn’t have much but never ceased to be amazed at her sacrifice especially in those days when I was struggling financially but determined to keep Biblepraise running. We never met each other till she went to meet with the Lord but I know one day, I’ll meet her again and be able to appreciate her for all the love she showered on me. She became my inspiration to be a blessing to others.

That's love in action – not just words, but tangible care that meets real needs. It's the kind of love that mirrors Christ's love for us, which "always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."

The next superpower we will be looking at, is the power of words. Words might seem ordinary, but Proverbs 18:21 tells us that "the tongue has the power of life and death." Our words can build up or tear down, encourage or discourage and bring hope or despair. James warns us about the tongue being "a restless evil, full of deadly poison" (James 3:8), yet we also see throughout Scripture how God's own Word brings life and healing.

Think about a teacher who tells a struggling student, "I believe in you – you can do this." Those simple words can change the trajectory of a young person's life. Or consider the power of a genuine apology, or words of encouragement spoken to someone battling depression. In our age of social media, where words fly about so carelessly, Christians have the superpower to use our words to bless, not curse; to build up, not tear down.

I remember as a growing Christian, I had words with another commuter in a bus. After the argument was over, I felt convicted in my spirit and later on tapped the guy. He reared back thinking I was going to have another go at him but was shocked when I said, “I am sorry for what I said”. He couldn’t even respond, he just nodded and smiled. The power of words as a superpower can change an environment for good.

Next up is the superpower of forgiveness. Forgiveness might be the most counter-cultural superpower we possess. Our world says, "Don't get mad, get even." But Jesus taught us to pray, "Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us" (Matthew 6:12). Colossians 3:13 goes further: "Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you."

This doesn't mean forgiveness is easy – it rarely is. But it is powerful. Unforgiveness is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die. When we forgive, we're not saying what happened was okay; we're choosing to release the burden of bitterness and anger.

Consider the story of a mother whose son was killed by a drunk driver. After years of anger and grief, she chose to forgive the driver and even began visiting him in prison. Her forgiveness didn't change the past, but it changed her future. She found peace she'd been searching for and the driver's life was transformed by such unexpected grace. That's the supernatural power of forgiveness at work.

Finally, we have the superpower of reconciliation. Closely linked to forgiveness is reconciliation – the power to mend broken relationships and restore unity. Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5:18 that God "reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation." We're not just recipients of reconciliation; we're called to be agents of it.

This superpower is desperately needed in our divided world. Whether it's family feuds, church splits, or workplace conflicts, Christians have the ability to be peacemakers. Jesus said, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God" (Matthew 5:9).

These Christian superpowers aren't reserved for a select few. They are available to every believer through the Holy Spirit. They won't make you famous or get you on the front page of major newspapers but they will change lives, starting with your own.

So the question isn't whether we have these powers, it's whether we will use them. Today, who needs your love? Where can your words bring life? Who is waiting for your forgiveness? What broken relationship could you help reconcile?

These are the superpowers that truly matter, the ones that last for eternity.
