The Power of Encounter

by Steve Popoola on January 20th, 2025

Every person longs for transformation at some point in life—seeking change, renewal, or a fresh sense of purpose. Most of the time however, we tend to look to personal effort and external circumstances to bring about this change but the truth is that real and lasting transformation comes only through an encounter with God.

The word encounter refers to an unexpected or significant meeting. It is an experience that can change the course of one’s life. A spiritual encounter is not just an emotional experience or a momentary inspiration; it is a divine appointment that leaves an indelible mark on a person’s life. When a person has a true encounter with God, everything changes—mindsets shift, destinies are altered, and the power of God becomes real in their lives.

One of the most dramatic transformations in the Bible is that of Saul, who later became the Apostle Paul. Saul was a zealous persecutor of Christians, determined to stop the spread of the gospel. But on his way to Damascus, he had an encounter with Jesus that completely changed his life. A bright light from heaven shone around him, and he heard the voice of Jesus saying, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” (Acts 9:4).

This encounter left him blind for three days, during which he fasted and prayed. God then sent Ananias to lay hands on him, restoring his sight and filling him with the Holy Spirit. From that moment, Saul became Paul, the greatest missionary of the early church. A single encounter turned a persecutor into a preacher of the gospel!

Zacchaeus was a chief tax collector, a man despised by his community because of his corrupt practices. But he had a deep longing to see Jesus. Because of his short stature, he climbed a sycamore tree to get a better view as Jesus passed by. To his surprise, Jesus stopped, looked up, and called him by name: “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” (Luke 19:5).

That encounter transformed Zacchaeus. He immediately repented, vowing to give half of his goods to the poor and restore fourfold to anyone he had cheated. Jesus declared, “Today salvation has come to this house.” (Luke 19:9). An encounter with Jesus turned a greedy man into a generous and redeemed follower.

A new year presents an opportunity for us as believers to seek fresh encounters with God. It is not enough to have knowledge about God; we need to experience His presence in a way that transforms us. Just as Paul and Zacchaeus were never the same after their encounters, we too can experience radical change when we draw near to Him. The Bible says, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” (James 4:8).

What practical ways can we seek enounter with God?

  • Through Prayer and Fasting: Many biblical encounters happened in times of prayer and fasting. Seeking God with a sincere heart invites His presence into our lives. Fasting helps us to deny our flesh and tune into the voice of God. It is an act of humility and dependence on God that allows us to draw closer to Him. Jesus Himself fasted for forty days before beginning His ministry, setting an example for us to follow (Matthew 4:2). When we dedicate time to fasting and prayer, we position ourselves for divine revelation and transformation.

  • Through His Word: God speaks through His Word. A deep study of the Scriptures allows us to experience divine revelation and transformation. The Bible is not just a historical book; it is the living, breathing Word of God (Hebrews 4:12). When we meditate on the Word, we allow it to shape our thoughts, attitudes, and actions. Encountering God through His Word brings wisdom, guidance, and strength for our spiritual journey. Psalms 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Let us make it a priority to dwell in the Word and let it lead us into divine encounters.

  • Through Worship:  Worship creates an atmosphere for divine encounters. It shifts our focus from our struggles to the greatness of God. Worship is more than just singing songs; it is a lifestyle of adoration and reverence for God. When we worship in spirit and in truth (John 4:24), we invite His presence to dwell among us. Many in the Bible experienced God’s power through worship—Paul and Silas, when imprisoned, worshipped God, and their chains were broken (Acts 16:25-26). When we immerse ourselves in worship, we make room for God's supernatural intervention in our lives.

  • Through Surrender: Zacchaeus surrendered his wealth, and Paul surrendered his old ways. When we yield completely to God, He reveals Himself in ways we never imagined. Surrendering to God means letting go of control and trusting Him with every aspect of our lives. It requires humility, obedience, and a willingness to follow wherever He leads. Romans 12:1 urges us to offer our bodies as “a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God.” When we fully surrender, God takes over and leads us into the purpose He has designed for us.

For those who have not yet experienced the saving power of Jesus, now is the time to seek Him. Just as Saul was living in ignorance, and Zacchaeus was trapped in a life of greed, many today are bound by sin and the oppressive power of the enemy. But Jesus is still calling, just as He did to Zacchaeus and Paul. He is reaching out with love, grace, and the power to transform. “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” (Revelation 3:20).

A divine encounter changes everything. As we embrace this new year, let us seek to know God more deeply, to have fresh encounters with Him that will mold us into vessels fit for His use. If you have never had an encounter with Jesus, now is the time to open your heart to Him.

May this year be a year of transformation, breakthroughs, and divine visitations in your life. Amen!
