In the first part of this topic, we learned about Jesus being the good shepherd. He made this statement himself in John 10:11 and went on to explain the difference between the good shepherd and a hired hand. I wrote about how I memorised Psalms 23 as a child but did not really understand it until I gave my life to Christ. We continue to journey through Psalms 23 as we take on the second part of verse 3. “He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake”. The world we live in is full of dangerous paths into which many have fallen with grave consequences. The people who fall into these deadly traps are not necessarily gullible or unwise, but even those who are wise can inadvertently get caught up in a lie that can lead them into risky and slippery terrains.

When I gave my life to Jesus at a young age, I began to read the Bible. Not much of it made sense to me then but some of the stories captivated me. I had memorised Psalm 23 not because I understood it but because growing up with my church going parents, I had to learn it in Sunday School. As I grew into adulthood however, “the Lord is my Shepherd” began to mean more to me than than the words I just recite in Church. In John 10:11, Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep”. After making this declaration, Jesus went further to explain key difference between a good Shephered and hired hand. The one who is hired to take care of the sheep is just in it for the benefits and does not really care whateve...

As we approached the end of the year 2023, a familiar hymn from my secondary school days came to mind. It's incredible how the words penned by composers centuries ago remain relevant today, despite the changes over the years. The hymn, "Our God, Our Help In Ages Past," written by Isaac Watts in 1719, holds a special place in my heart. The first verse of the hymn resonates with my personal experiences. Towards the end of last year, I faced a severe illness that landed me in the hospital. This unexpected turn of events left my usually active self physically incapacitated and mentally drained. Despite the challenges, the knowledge that God, along with the prayers from my family and church community, sustained me through the difficult period.During my reco...

Have you ever watched detective shows or movies, where clever detectives work tirelessly to solve crimes, figure out what really happened, and bring the culprits to justice? It's fascinating to see how they sift through clues, eliminate suspects, and piece together the puzzle. But here's the twist: Sometimes, they get it wrong. Why? Because they base their conclusions on evidence, and evidence doesn't always equal the truth.I have deliberately avoided engaging in any conversation regarding the ongoing Israeli/Hamas conflict. I have rather chosen to pray and trust that God will intervene in the situation. If you go online and search for anything related to the conflict, the probability is high that you will see a number of links with the title, “The Truth About the...

Embarking on a long journey requires careful and adequate preparation. I confess that I often leave preparations for journeys till a day or two before departure, thinking that I don’t have much to pack, only to discover at the last minute, bits and pieces of things that need to be put in place, giving rise to anxiety and worry that I might not be on time. Thankfully, my wife is the opposite. Any time I have a trip to undertake, she ensures that weeks before the time, I start preparing, albeit reluctantly. Several days before the journey, she would check to ensure that I have all the important things packed and if anything comes to mind, she would confirm that I have those things packed. As Christians, we often forget that our lives are full of short a...

It is quite easy for us to think about the things we want in life. If I were to ask everyone here what you want for the next month or year, you would easily come up with a long list of items. If however, I ask you to list out the things you need for that same period, it would take more time and effort to draw up the list and it would be way more shorted than the list of things you want.I also found out that most times circumstances dictate what we see as our most important needs. For instance, during the time of sickness, if anyone asks us what our greatest need is, we would day, “My greatest need right now is to be healed”. If you are out of work, you would see your greatest need to be geeting a job. I have seen mothers literally in nightgowns and without shoes, rushi...
