In the light of recent global COVID-19 epidemic and it’s impact on countries, communities, families and individuals, I have been reflecting on the plans we make in the midst of so much uncertainty in this world that we live in.No doubt at the beginning of this year, we all had plans for what we wanted to achieve. Personally, I was looking forward to a couple of conferences I had lined up for the year - that isn’t going to happen. I was also hoping to take my wife on a holiday trip sometime during the summer. That also isn’t going to happen. I had a couple of invites to weddings during the course of the year. There is still a question mark on whether those will hold or not depending on what happens before the dates and one has already been postponed till October.
For me, every new year is a chance for me to reboot. As an IT professional, one of the things we often ask users to do if they are having problems with their computers or devices is to reboot. To reboot is to restart, to clear the old data and initialise new resources. Often, this is usually all it takes to fix the issue assuming that there are no other underlying causes.One year rolls away and another one rolls in, all within a second. As usual, the TV is usually focused on the fireworks display by various countries trying to out-do each other. People holding hands and hugging each other as the countdown completes. It is common for people to make plans towards the end of the year and I have often heard people give a verbal list of plans or ‘resolutions’ like;
1. To start going to the gym
2. To eat healthily
3. To spend more time reading the Bible
4. To spend more time praying
As laudable as these plans may be, it is no surprise that by the end of the second week of the new year, a lot of those who made these plans would have given up on some or all of them.
From my observation in the gym where I work out, January is usually the busiest month of the year, especially the first week. Many of those who start the year resolving to start working out, throng the various gyms.
For those who are consistent...
